Books for classrooms fundraising event!

 

A great big thank you to all parents, family and friends who have supported our fundraising event to buy books for classrooms. Before half term the children looked on The Book People website and together we all chose the books that we wanted for our classroom. 

My little pony, David Walliams collection, A Diary Of A Wimpy Kid collection and a lovely collection of fairy tales where a few of the popular fiction book chosen. We also bought some great non-fiction books including an I-Spy series, Science crackers and a series about different life cycles. We bought lots of different ability books for different reading levels and interests. 

The children have loved reading all of our new books and have taken pride in the them.

As a school Holly Hill are celebrating a local resident who will be soon turning to the grand age of 100! Each class are doing art work based around Doris and her life. In KS1 we are making 100 bunches of flowers.

Wren had such a great time tie dying a little piece of fabric that Mrs Brooks brought in a HUGE piece of fabric for us to tie dye. Thank you Mrs Brooks!

World Book Day 2017

We all looked fabulous dressed as our favourite book character.

Our day was based around our favourite books doing lots of fun activities. We wrote a book review, read lots of stories and had a great assembly where we had a little book quiz.

Having fun experimenting with measuring in meters. 

We got into partners and had a go at throwing a bean bag as far as we could across the playground. We then had to estimate how far we had thrown our beanbag in meters. After we had written down our estimation we got the meter sticks and measured how far we had thrown it.

Wren Class have achieved their class treat as they haven collected all of their class points. On Wednesday 1st February Wren class are having a pyjama and movie afternoon. Please send your children with a set of pyjamas to get changed into after lunch. We will provide them with sweets and popcorn for an extra treat.

In maths this week KS1 are learning about multiples. We are now superstars with our 2, 5 and 10 times tables so now we are moving onto arrays.

This week in maths we are learning about 3D shapes. Why not look around your house and see what shapes you can find! 

This week in English we are going to be writing a letter to Santa! We are very excited and already have lots of ideas what we can write. We have to be on our best behaviour because Santa is always watching!

Wren Class had a fab day for Children in Need!

We all looked fabulous in our spotty clothes to raise money for such a great cause. Thank you for all of your effort. Wren Class winner for being the best dressed was SOPHIE HADFIELD! We loved all of the different coloured buttons your Grandma sewed on.

Welcome back

We hope you have all had a lovely break and that the children are all ready for an exciting half term in the run up to Christmas. This half term our focus in English will be 'Letters.' Our texts include Meerkat Mail, The Jolly Postman, Herman's Letters and the Jolly Christmas Postman. The children will have the opportunity to read, study features and write their own letters.

In Maths our areas of learning include addition, subtraction, money, 3D shapes and Christmas problem solving. We have already done lots of great maths work that we will keep practising.

 

In Technology we will be designing and making our own Christmas biscuits. Yummy!

In Art we will be carrying out two artists' studies. In Science we have come to the end of our work on materials but we will continue our work on seasonal change as we from Autumn into Winter.

We have also already started to practise the songs for our Nativity this year and parts will be given out soon.

 

As you can see we are going to be busy, busy, busy and we look forward to sharing our learning with you.

This week we have had a fab day at the Mansfield Museum exploring about new and old toys.

We had a fun filled day with lots of fun activities...

  • Walking around the museum to try and find the 20 toys that Geoff had hidden (We got them all!)
  • Watching the beginning of Toy Story and looking at all the different types of toys.
  • Playing musical bumps- Alfie Longdon Won!
  • We played a new game where we had to guess which toy was taken from the tray.
  • Played with lots of very old toys.
  • Learnt what old toys were made from.

  • Watched extracts from Superhero films and explained what is happening, what might happen next, looked at superhero Super powers and talked about our favourites.

The Children in both year 1 and 2 have settled in well. We have been learning about each other and thinking about why we are special. We have been talking about what makes a friend special and about how we can be a good friend.
