Phoenix Group 2016-17

A Pep Talk from Kid President to You

We all need a little encouragement every now and then. Kid President, knowing this, has put together a video you can play each morning as you wake up or to share with your friend who needs a kick in the right direction. Take a moment and spread some encouragement.

It’s hard to believe we are well into the Summer term and heading towards the Summer holidays!

New groups have started in Phoenix. The groups now run on a Wednesday for KS2 children and Thursday for KS1.

We’ve already had lots of fun exploring how we make friends and thinking about what the code to a good friendship is.

We watched the BBC learning Zone Friendship code clip below to help us think about it.

We watched this video to explore all the different emotions we feel.

Alfred & Shadow - A short story about emotions (education psychology health animation)

Alfred is in love. He is also angry, shameful, scared, sad and lonley. His good friend Joy supports him in his constant fight against Shadow. Join the fight! And maybe you will discover something new about your own emotions along the way.

Oh my goodness how time has flown recently!

A New Year brings new groups. At the moment there are two groups for years 1,2 and 3 and one group for years 4, 5 and 6.

Both groups are working so hard on the topics and themes we have covered so far!

We have thought really carefully about ourselves and our friendships. Just before we broke up for half term we began looking at our emotions and some of the strong emotions we can feel. We drew lots of faces on a blank head to see what we thought different emotions looked like.

We will be learning strategies as to  how we can calm down from these emotions and not let them control our behaviour and reactions.

We've been singing this song in Phoenix heartheart

The Feelings Song

It's a song for children about feelings and emotions. This song was written and performed by A.J. Jenkins. Video by KidsTV123. Copyright 2013 A.J.Jenkins/KidsTV123: All rights reserved.

Check out this video we have watched in Phoenix to help us understand our ANGER!

"Just Breathe" by Julie Bayer Salzman & Josh Salzman (Wavecrest Films)

The inspiration for "Just Breathe" first came about a little over a year ago when I overheard my then 5-year-old son talking with his friend about how emotions affect different regions of the brain, and how to calm down by taking deep breaths - all things they were beginning to learn in Kindergarten at their new school, Citizens of the World Charter School, in Mar Vista, CA.

September / October 2016

Welcome back everyone.

Phoenix group is back!!!

The format has changed ever so slightly this year in an effort to make sure we include as many children as we need to within school.

The groups are now working on a 10 session program. There are 3 groups, 2 of which are for years 4,5 and 6 and one group for younger children in Years 1, 2 and 3.

I’ve put together a more specific program.

We will be working on our Self-esteem throughout as well learning more about our emotions and how they affect us, how we think and learn, in which we will try to develop a positive attitude to learning and finally we will look at how we cope with challenges and changes in our lives.

As always we will do this through circle time games and discussions and our Must Do activities.

It is my aim that at the end of the 10 sessions the children will feel confident and secure enough to no longer need this support. However if it is felt that they still have needs in these areas, children may stay in the group for further sessions.

The current groups are loving being part of Phoenix and have already come so far! They are really enjoying the Self-esteem games we play during our circle time sessions and have completed some fabulous work to make our Nest look amazing!!

Feel free to pop down and have a look at the Nest! The children and I are very proud of it!!!

Summer  term 2016

Wow  what a whirlwind term! It’s been a very busy term with many groups being cancelled due to INSET days, school trips, treat days, visitors in schools and Mrs Parrwood finally moving house!!!

Still when we did meet up we had lots of fun.

We have spent time thinking about ourselves and boosting our self-esteem. We looked really carefully at our inner strengths and how these can steer us through difficult times and help us cope with changes in our lives. Many of us are facing big changes such as moving house or schools and new classes.

All the children approached this topic in such a grown-up, knowledgeable way and I know that they will shine like the stars they are in their new schools and classes!

Phoenix group will be back next year. There will be a few changes to the format as I do like keep things under constant review to ensure Phoenix group is the best it can be!

Thank you guys for all your hard work this year you are all amazing.smiley

Year 6’s I LOVED heart every minute of working with you and I have absolute faith in you and how fantastic you are going to be in the future.

Lots of love to everyone have a fabulous summer break

Mrs Parrwood  heartheartheart

Spring Term 2016

We’ve had a really busy term this Spring. We finished off our “Growth Mindset” work looking at how mistakes are our friends and how they help us learn. We even became mini neuro scientists looking at the brain and what each part of it is responsible for and how we can stretch it to learn and develop more!

We have now started re looking at strong emotions, so far we have talked about ANGER and WORRY.

After the next half term holiday we will be reshuffling the groups around a little. There are many children who have done so well in Phoenix that their teachers and Mrs Parrwood felt it was time they remained in class full time and put into practise everything they have learnt. Although it seems sad they’re leaving it is a positive move and Mrs Parrwood and the Nest will always be there for them if ever they need it.

It will be fun welcoming new friends to our group.

Week beginning 1st February

Wow it’s been a busy week!

This week we were thinking all about our hopes and dreams and how we could reach them. We had some wonderful dreams! Lots of us wanted to be successful You Tubers and make some great videos for people to enjoy, definitely a young person’s thing!! We had people wanting to be vets, walk their dogs better by themselves, own their own pubs, work in a prison to help people who had made mistakes, Premier league footballers and rock stars! We loved talking about it and we were really great at knowing how we could reach our dreams!

During our free time board games were our favourite thing this week! Especially” Hungry Hippos” we showed great skills in working/playing together without too many arguments!!!!

Mrs Parrwood visited her ELSA group this week too and finally received her certificate as a fully fledged ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant). She’s feeling very chuffed and knows it will help everyone in Phoenix group!

A belated Happy New Year to everyone!!

Our new year has got off to a flying start! We are nicely settled in our new room which is fantastic, we have a cooker in our kitchen area , a proper dining table. We have different areas for learning now too, we have an Art/Craft area, a Writing area, Maths and Science area, a large carpet for our circle time, and a separate quiet area.

Already this layout and space has had a positive effect on the children, everyone (including Mrs Parrwood) is calmer and happier now that we can spread out and have room.

We’ve have a new structure to our afternoon too.  Our circle time has become more detailed as you will see in the planning attached, which the children have responded well too and give some really grown up and insightful comments.

My camera is up and running again at last so hopefully I’ll be able to show you more lovely pics of our room and what we get up to.

Week beginning 9th November 2015

Hello again,

We have been working super hard on our theme of Friendship again this week and we know it’s a theme we all have a few problems with here and there.

We watched a video on the BBC Bitesize Website about a school that asked their children to develop a ”Friendship code”. We liked a lot of their ideas and have decided to develop our own for our school.

We found out that even best friends can fall out but can always make up again! We also decided that just because you have a best friend doesn’t mean you can’t allow new people into your friendships.

Look out around school for our Friendship Code and posters we are making to go with it.

We got very excited this week as we finally have sand in our sandpit and have already had loads of fun digging in it and burying our legs!!!!

Sadly Mrs Parrwood’s camera is still not working but as soon as it is we’ll put some pictures up to show you how fab our sandpit is!!

Week Beginning 2nd November 2015

Welcome back Phoenix Group!

Hope you all had fabulous half term breaks, mine was quite lazy but it was nice to relax with Torin!!

I have started a course this week to learn more about how I can help in Nurture group so this means that the Wednesday Phoenix group is now happening on a Thursday for a few weeks.

We’ve started this week well looking really carefully at Friendships.

We’ve played a game of Friendship Bingo and discussed what makes a good friend, how this makes us feel, when friendships can go wrong and how we behave in a friendship. The children all had some marvellous things to say and showed a real understanding of how friendships work. We’ll be exploring this more over the next few weeks.

We took part in Bonfire night by decorating some Ginger cookies and painting using toilet roll tubes.

For our Mindfulness this week we listened to a raisin!! Sounds strange I know but it was a way of making us aware of all our senses!

Sadly there are no photo’s this week as my camera isn’t working but hopefully I’ll have it back soon!

Week beginning 12th October

Hello again from all of us in Phoenix group.

Another fabulous week was had by the all the children.

This week we began thinking about the feelings and emotions people can feel and all the different words we can use to describe or explain these feelings. We managed to think of lots of words and Mrs Parrwood is displaying them on the wall in The Nest.

We finished some of our sewing projects this week too and even began new ones!! We’re really starting to enjoy sewing, so much so that we’re hoping to get some new patterns!

We played with a new type of dough this week too. Mrs Parrwood made it using Cornflour and hair conditioner, it smelt absolutely gorgeous!

We also enjoyed a Potions Lab this week (don’t worry it was all totally safe no dangerous chemicals were involved!).  We mixed different household things like Bicarbonate of Soda and Vinegar and then watched what happened! We felt like mad scientists and made some awful smells with the vinegar and lemon juice!

Mr Moorland has also started making us a giant sandpit outside The Nest too this week. It’s so big we’ll be able to stand in it to dig! Mrs Parrwood is very excited as are we! Friends of Holly Hill have helped us get this by giving us money for all the wood and sand! A big THANK YOU to them!!

Have a look at the pictures below to see all the fun we had!

Week beginning 5th October

We’ve had another busy, and sometimes messy, week in Phoenix Group.

We really enjoyed sharing the things we brought into school in our “All About Me” bags and chatting about our likes and dislikes and our families. We know each other inside out now!!

A few of us had a go at sewing this week, we did find it quite hard but we didn’t give up.

We also had a go at painting our self-portraits using a mirror. Mrs Parrwood had a go too!

Some new Behaviour Balloons to help us realise when we need to stop and think!!!

Hello All!!

Welcome to the Phoenix Group page!

We’re really proud to have our own page this year so that we can keep you up to date with all the wonderful things we do and learn in Phoenix Group.

We are a wonderful team of children who get together for one afternoon a week with Mrs Parrwood to learn more about our emotions and how to use them effectively in everyday life or when things get tough!

During our afternoon we follow our own timetable which includes a “Happiness Challenge” a PSE (Personal, Social and Emotional) activity, some play activities, Mindfulness and yoga time and snack and drink time.

All our play activities are planned in a way to help us feel calm and happy whilst we learn to cooperate with each other and solve problems.

We work in “The Nest”, which is in the KS1 area. It is meant to be different form the other classrooms as it is meant to feel more homely and comforting. Everyone who comes in here feels just that! Even the teachers!!!!

Keep an eye out on this page for notices and examples of things we get up to!!!!
