Dove 2016-17

In our topic we will be learning about -

Greek gods, architecture, schools and the Olympic Games. 

We will be reading a variety of myths and legends to find out more about life in ancient Greece.

This is our history topic and we will investigate what life was like in the stone age.

Rocks and Soils.

As part of our science topic we will investigate rocks to compare their properties, learn how fossils are formed and discover what soil is.

A very big THANK YOU to all the children who brought in artefacts and talked to relatives to discover interesting facts about mining. This really brought our topic to life and helped us immerse ourselves in finding out what it was like working in a mine.             

We started our topic with a WOW day all about mining.

 

We had our own mine tunnel to push coal arts along, made pit props to hold the pit ceiling up and made day lamps.

This half term we will be investigating the history of the local area.

We will also be using a variety of maps and geographical sources to look at places around the world.

ART

We have looked at the work of the artist Eric Joyner who includes robots ( and doughnuts ) in his pictures.

   

We have created our own art work in his style.

 

SCIENCE

We have carried out a variety of science investigations to learn about forces and magnets.

Do different surfaces need different amounts of force to make an object move?

 

Are all magnets the same strength?

Our WOW day.

As part of our wow day we used magnets to create some magnet art.

In English, we will be reading the story of The Iron Man by Ted Hughes.

As part of our topic we will be investigating magnets and forces.

Don't Forget

We are now doing gymnastics in P.E. on a Wednesday

so make sure you have your P.E. kit with            

you.

 

Some of the great activities we have done so far -

Cooked and eaten curry. We made our curry and than had a great feast eating it.

Maths day -

We worked out the cost of buying an Indian meal and did data handling with Divas.

 

We have rewritten the story of Rama and Sita as a play and are creating our own shadow puppets and theatres to show our performance.

 

Wow day.

As part of our topic we have also been learning about Diwali - the festival of light.

To introduce our topic we had a day of fun that involved traditional Indian dancing, rangoli patterns and mehndi patterns.

Light safety

Looking at how shadows are made, measuring the size of shadows and how they change when the light source is moved.

 

We will be investigating light sources.

 

Our topic this half term is light and shadows.

 

Autumn 2

Just a reminder. Our P.E. day will be Tuesday so can all children have their kit with them. Thank you.

We had a fantastic time on our WOW day to introduce our topic.

We made and ate a delicious fruit salad, got creative in the style of Archimboldo by making vegetable pictures and used our artistic skills to produce tree collages.

Well done to all the children in Dove Class for such a fantastic start to the new school year.

 

Our topic this half term is plants. Look out for the newsletter which will tell you all about the activities we will be doing over the coming weeks.

The final day of our Roman topic.

We had a fantastic day creating Roman mosaics and having a Roman V Britons battle. We even looked like Romans for the day! Some brilliant costumes. Well done Dove Class.

Our trip to Nottingham Castle.

We had a fantastic day learning about the Romans.

We got chance to be archaeologists for the day and examine artefacts. We found Roman settlements on maps, played Roman games, wrote on a Roman wax tablet and even had the opportunity to dress like a Roman!

We have been working cooperatively to make life size Roman soldiers. We have done an amazing job and will soon have our very own Roman army!

We made 3D Roman people. They were really tricky and tested our perseverance and problem solving skills but we got there in the end!

Reading

 Please read with your child at least five times a week. Don't forget, you can use Reading Eggs as another form of reading and complete the comprehension activities to further improve your reading. Its fun to read and it fills our heads with knowledge!

What about challenging your friends on Mathletics! It is a fun way to improve your Maths knowledge and you can compete against other people across the world!  Please remember to practice your times tables each week too.
